The Sky Watchers’ Association was established in the year 1978 by a handful of enthusiastic Kolkatan amateur astronomers. The principal objectives of the Association are to promote amateur astronomy, to popularize astronomy and to expose superstitious beliefs related with celestial object and phenomena in general and astrology in particular. With time the Association has gathered strength through ups and downs.

Members and visitors gather every Saturday 5 pm at the Association’s office cum observation centre at Dhakuria, Kolkata to use the library, to hold lectures and discussions on astronomy and related subjects and for sky observation with naked eye and through telescopes.

The Association, with the help of different local institutions and organizations, conduct sky observation through telescope and lectures with slide projections for students and general public in Kolkata and districts with emphasis on rural areas.

The Association holds every year a four day Astronomy Camp in winter at remote dark sky areas for advanced training on observational astronomy. It also organizes Special Camps for important astronomical events.

The Association publishes books and leaflets in Bengali and English on astronomy and related subjects. It also publishes a monthly bulletin in English, Sky Watching Guide, for persons interested in astronomy and sky watching. The bulletin can be had by post too.
